An Exhibtion ~ Metal & Brush at Artist Center Kalaghodda Mumbai April 14 - April 20

Sculpture and Painting exhibition by eminent sculptor,Sri Shankar Ghosh, and painter Srimati Swagata Bose.

:LIVING BY ART, MY WAY....."An artist strives to create his signature style in his lifetime which is an extension of his personality and a language of expression he is comfortable expressing in .Whether it is a poetry,or a painting ,an artist who is in a search of his identity in a mass of millions of human beings on the planet, undeniably pursues his goal relentlessly, his individuality, his self in his work... and creates what comes from within his soul.I have been fortunate to discover myself,my medium and my individual style of painting as distinct from any other. My style is a combination of strokes and wash drips which are allowed to flow on the canvas freely, using acrylic as it gives me the advantage of both mediums, oil and water-color.I approach the canvas with a flat brush and my first strokes are to head for the mass on a wet surface. As I apply paint and sprinkle water and allow the drips to wander,I chisel away portions of paint not wanted in a correction method as I go on to apply more colors and built on the form and subject as I go on,keeping the strokes which I want to retain. The subject I choose is mostly figurative and representation of India, regions which I feel might become ex tint with technological intervention, like my "Talsari" series of fishermen with their nets which will very soon not be seen ,hence capturing them in this time frame becomes my intent. preserving and keeping historical evidence of what exists today in India.

Easter Trivia
Easter is a joyous occasion celebrated by Christians all over the world as the day Jesus was resurrected. Although there is no mention of them in the Bible, rabbits, colorful eggs and an egg hunt have become an integral part of this occasion. Ever wonder what they have to do with Easter?

The word ‘Easter’ comes from ‘Eastre’, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring who was honored during the equinox at this time of the year. The traditions that go along with this occasion can be traced back to both Christian and pagan religions as a day honoring spring and marking re-birth.

The egg-laying Easter hare or bunny can be traced back to German immigrants in the US. This Easter hare was believed to lay colorful eggs in the grass, for which children made nests. Eventually, the custom spread and Easter goodies expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests.

For Christians, eggs are considered the seed of life and are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and resurrection. They were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

It's Italian food for April's Fatka!
The last time Pet Pujaris met up for Italian food, it was at the all veg restaurant Bellagio in Fort. It's been awhile since then. Yes, you get pizza's & pastas at most restaurants these days, but the specialized pizza places are depleting (not talking about fast food here) more than Iranian Cafes that don't actually shut :P
So it's Di Napoli Pizzeria this time, if you've been here before, don't worry, they've got a whole new menu http://www.zomato.com/mumbai/di-napoli-nariman-point/menu#tabtop
Also, no set menu this time, it's À la carte, but, we're gonna be getting a 15% discount on our bill!
We're meeting on Sunday at 1pm, be on time people!

The Root Reel in association with Dharamshala International Film Festival presents Nishtha Jain's Gulabi Gang the documentary

Tuesday, 29th April.
6:30pm Onwards.

Entry Free on a first-come-first-seated basis.

Gulabi Gang
Directed by Nishtha Jain
96 mins. (With English Subtitles)

In 2006 an extraordinary women's movement started in the Bundelkhand region, What started as a small movement in one of the poorest districts of Uttar Pradesh has now spread across whole of North India and has even gained recognition the world over. The group is known as the Gulabi Gang .These women were tired of a corrupt judicial system which refused to take up cases of abused women and finally when nothing was happening, they took matters in their own hands and solved cases..

Enter the badlands of Bundelkhand in central India and you have entered a place of desolation, dust and despair. And yet it is hope that we discover as we follow the pink sari-clad women of GULABI GANG. These women travel long distances by cart and tractor, bus and train, to wrest justice for women and Dalits, undeterred by sneering policemen and condescending bureaucrats. Sampat Pal, their leader is a rough-and-tough woman with a commanding personality. Despite her lack of education she has evolved her own brand of feminism and egalitarian politics. Her strength lies in her words. She is constantly on the move – today investigating a young woman’s suspicious death, tomorrow protesting against a corrupt official. The gang encounters resistance everywhere – whole villages connive in protecting the perpetrators of violence. As the film pulls us into the centre of these blazing conflicts, it uncovers a complex story, disturbing yet heartening.

We essentially crowd source (mostly) unused products like clothing, books, home decor stuff etc to resell at our event called ‘The Thrift Shop’. The venue is recreated to reflect a vintage thrift boutique to add to the shopper’s experience. We ask people (YOU) to send in donations and take utmost care to go through everything individually and personally so as to filter it before it goes on sale.
The sale is primarily by charity, for charity – the products are all donated by people, the proceeds made are all donated to the designated charity(s).

About SHRI SANT GADGE MAHARAJ VIDYALAYA:

At Quirk Box , they dream that a day may come when every individual in our country would have the right and privilege of education. They have associated themselves with Shri Sant Gadge Maharaj Vidyalaya, Pune in support of education for under privileged children.

Harishchandra Zende Patil became the school’s founder member and likeminded individuals formed its council of members. It grew to have strength of 3000 students. Soon the government recognition and grants followed. The school has became a vibrant centre of education and continues to be one.

About DEEDS

The organisation was established in 2003 with a commitment to help individuals who are Deaf. A group of successful philanthropic businessmen came together and laid the foundation of work for the Deaf by establishing the Bajaj Institute of Learning, Dehradun, 1999. Their dedicated attempt was to empower the Deaf and provide a platform for their education and overall development and work towards their empowerment. Among the different disabilities, the problem of the Deaf was the most neglected. There are over 6 lacs NGOs in India working in diverse fields and less than 0.1% of these support the cause of the Deaf.
With this need in mind DEEDS was formed to work for the Deaf towards their upliftment and emancipation in society.
