Interested in doing BRMs? But not sure of going the distance? Here's a simple way to prepare for a brevet: a Populaire!

This populaire is a great introduction to the sport and culture of randonneuring, and the perfect opportunity to check out what Mumbai has to offer, and to make a few more riding friends. Remember, it's not a race. But there is a time limit! A populaire is simply a shorter version of a brevet!!!

Whether you're an experienced randonnuer or randonneuse, or simply want to get a taste of what randonneuring is all about, this ride is beautiful, and a blast!

Each rider reaching the finish line first would have covered the same distance as the last rider and would get the same medal and certificate.

THIS IS A FULLY SELF SUPPORTED RIDE.

NO EXTERNAL SUPPORT WILL BE PROVIDED OR PROMOTED.

DO NOT LOSE YOUR BREVET CARD!!!!

Come ride some interesting roads in the mumbai with us. We start from Nirmal Lifestyle , ride through Kalyan , reach Food Hub (KFC | Kamat) and come back to Nirmal Lifestyle within a stipulated time

Refer to our website https://sites.google.com/site/audaxindiarandonneurs/ for ACP rules, Brevet rules, dos and don’ts and all other brevet related queries.

A Populaire is not a Brevet, so it will not be homologated by ACP, France, but will be conducted under the same rules as the regular BRMs, and will help riders to prepare for those.

Important Points:

Start contrôle closes immediately after the ride begins.

Water Stations will kept at fixed intervals between the start point and end point to avoid dehydration.

Insure your cables and chain are well adjusted and in good working condition. Check your patch kit from last season. The tubes and patches may need to be replaced.
How's your pump holding up? Does it still work? This is also a great time to try out lights, bags, racks, food, etc. Rear lights, in non-flashing mode only, are strongly encouraged for every ride. Consider bringing a bike lock to lock your bicycle up if you need to, at the controls.

Please be polite/courteous/civil to convenience store attendants. It's your responsibility to know the Mumbai city road laws.

Beware of riding in a paceline with riders you're unfamiliar.

Remember, the spirit of randonneuring emphasizes self-sufficiency. If your derailleur cable breaks, you gotta fix it. Also, it's your responsibility to have your brevet card properly completed at each control point. As is the nature of randonneuring, these rides are always unsupported. Your determination to get the ride done is paramount.

The rules of the game are

1. No support vehicles allowed.

2. No Helmet no ride

3. Reflective vest/Front Light/Tail light Mandatory

4. No Udhaari of Registration fee.

5. Please carry spare tubes and Puncture Kits.

6. Please attempt only if you are physically and mentally up to it.

7. Please carry a small first aid kit along

8. Please carry sufficient hydration albeit you will get at Time stations

9. Reporting opens an hour before the brevet is signaled off for the following:

1- Bike check

2. Populaire Card

3. Waiver Form to be signed

Please note that no participation will be allowed unless the above is in order

We feel proud to have a set of distinguished cyclists on our board who will together organise and manage these brevets.

Hoping to see many more of you becoming Randonneurs and Randonneurs graduating to become Super Randonneurs.

Breakfree Journeys goes walking about Mazgaon! Sunday, June 1 2014

Last Sunday, we walked across the Eastern part of Mazgaon. This week it is time to walk across the western part of Mazgaon, one of the 7 original islands that comprised Bombay.

From being the Portuguese stronghold to an area dominated by many communities living in harmony - the western part of Mazgaon is a prime example of mixed neighbourhood.

Climb right upto the Mazgaon hill and then walk down to the neighbourhoods of Love and Gunpowder lane and learn how these unique names came to be associated with the area. Wander about Daarukhana - Bombay's only ship breaking yard and rummage through the scrap to discover some treasures!

We wander about one of the last remaining Gaothans of Bombay - Matharpacady and learn about the Roman Catholic and East Indian histories. We will pass by the final resting places of people from many communities and talk about their contribution to Bombay and then finally end our walk at Gloria Church, Byculla.

Also, we will halt briefly at the world-famous-in-Bombay Gupta Kulfi whose amazing Kulfi will be just the right thing during the walk. A visit to Super Bakery for their amazing mawa puff is also on the cards.

We will meet at Dockyard Road Station, northern end at 500 PM on Sunday.

A total of 10-12 participants will be allowed on the walk.

Cost: Rs. 800 inclusive of a guided walk around the eastern part of Mazgaon.

Breakfree Journeys goes Walking about Bhendi Bazaar and Chor Bazaar! Saturday MAY 31st 2014

It is time to wander about the evolving Bhendi Bazaar! Its bylanes tell many stories, of people and of monuments. Inhabited largely by members of the Bohra community, our walk will introduce you to their history and their fascinating journey from Egypt to Bombay.

The bylanes of Bhendi Bazaar once resounded with Hindustani Classical music, as the 150 year old Bhendi Bazaar gharana was located here. We take a trip back into that time when Hindi film music and classical music weren't two disjoint ideas.

Hidden among in its small lanes is the world famous Chor Bazaar, with many anecdotes and tales of its own. A walk through here holds a thousand possibilities of discovering a treasure in the piles of second hand things kept on sale.

The food of Bhendi Bazaar is legendary and we walk past the institutions that define the food, you can bet that we will make a stop! Whether it is to taste the authentic Bohri sweets or dig into some lip smacking kebabs.

The plan:

We meet at Taj Ice-Cream at 5 pm on Saturday to begin our walk with the delicious hand made, fresh fruit ice creams of Taj, run by the genial Icecreamwala family.

Cost: Rs. 950 inclusive of a guided walk around Bhendi Bazaar by an expert on the neighbourhood and complimentary Taj Ice cream of a flavour of your choice!

Food costs will be shared equally among all of us.

A maximum of 12 participants will be allowed on this walk so confirm your participation soon.

To confirm call Rushikesh Kulkarni on 9820023362.

Special Screening at Prithvi Theatre | Presented by Vikalp@Prithvi

'The Unseen Sequence – Exploring Bharatanatyam through the art of Malavika Sarukkai'

Followed by a Q&A Session with Director Sumantra Ghosal

Synopsis:

In Malavika Sarukkai - an artist rooted in tradition but with a uniquely contemporary sensibility - one of India’s most profound classical arts, Bharatanatyam, is being re-interpreted, renewed, invigorated.

The film is not simply about Malavika Sarukkai; it deliberates the valuable connections and departures that the artist makes from a hallowed and, often, unforgiving tradition.

Today, even as she impresses her footprint on the world stage as a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, Malavika finds herself making increasingly personal choices about how she wishes to lead that life.

The film explores this co-existence of consummate artistry with a deeper, spiritual quest that makes her dance so exciting.
